Edinburgh experiences a generally temperate but varied type of weather. The chilliest months are December, January and February, with highest day temperatures characteristically around 5°C (41°F); the temperature rarely stays below freezing during the day in wintertime. Temperatures in the warmest months (June, July and August) can reach as high as around 21/22°C (70°F) during the day but it is not that uncommon for higher still with a record 30°C achieved in the Summer of 2003 and very pleasant temperatures well into October!
The city can be windy, and when it emanates from the north or east the chill factor is somewhat higher, especially in the winter months. Rain, some of it heavy, is of course possible at any time of the year. But Edinburgh's coastal location is one reason for the city getting relatively little snow in winter. What snow there is, is normally light and usually disappears in a day or so, or less. Edinburgh's Hogmanay has been blessed with very cold but dry, sunny weather for many years.
